Kwon Yuri (Hangul: 권유리; hanja: born December 5, 1989) is a South Korean singer, dancer, songwriter, actress, promotional model, MC and rapper. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Girls' Generation.

Biography

Yuri was born in Goyang, Gyeonggi, South Korea on December 5, 1989. She auditioned at the S.M. Entertainment Casting System and joined the company in 2001 after finishing in second place in the 2001 SM Youth Best Dancer Contest. She then underwent training for 5 years and 11 months before her debut. She graduated from Neunggok High School in 2008 and is currently attending Chung-Ang University along with fellow group member Sooyoung.[3]

Girls' Generation

Kwon Yuri is a member of South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. She joined the S.M. Entertainment Casting System when she competed in the 2001 SM Youth Best Dancer Contest where she finished in 2nd place.

Acting

Yuri played a part in the KBS sitcom Unstoppable Marriage (못말리는 결혼), alongside Sooyoung.
In 2012, Yuri played the female lead role Choi Anna in SBS's television drama Fashion King. This 20-episode drama was aired on SBS from March 19, 2012 to May 22, 2012. On December 31, 2012, Yuri received the "New Star Award" at SBS’s 2012 Drama Awards[4] and on May 9, 2013, she won the "Most Popular – Actress" award at the 49th PaekSang Arts Awards 2013 for her role.[5]
Yuri has been cast as the lead female role in South Korea's first swimming-themed film, "No Breathing", which will portray the friendship and love of youth. Yuri is planning on showing an enthusiastic performance in the role of Jung-eun, a girl who dreams of becoming a musician. It’s a character who has a variety of charms, from an easygoing personality to an innocent appearance, along with emotion-filled singing skills. There will be a love triangle between her and childhood friends, who will be played by Lee Jongsuk and Seo Inguk.[6]

Singing

She and Sooyoung sang the OST for the drama Working Mom entitled "Must!".
She also sang the theme song for Caribbean Bay with fellow members Taeyeon, Seohyun, Sunny, Jessica, Tiffany, Yoona and K-pop boy group 2PM.
In September 2012, her voice is featured on TVXQ 6th album Catch Me track song "Like A Soap".
In October 2013, she sang the OST Bling Star and Twinkle Twinkle for the movie "No Breathing".[7]

Show hosting

Yuri co-hosted the Korean music program Show! Music Core of MBC with fellow Girls' Generation member Tiffany, leaving after a farewell on July 31, 2010 to focus on their Japan debut.[8]
On September 5, 2009, she was an MC for the 2009 Incheon Korean Music Wave with Tiffany & announcer Oh Sang-jin.[9]
On August 29, 2010, she was an MC for the 2010 Incheon Korean Music Wave with Tiffany & announcer Oh Sang-jin.[10]
On December 25, 2010, she was also a host MC for Christmas Show! Music Core with group mate Tiffany. Yuri was an MC for the 2010 MBC Gayo Daejeon Show which was held on December 31 at the MBC Dream Center with Tiffany & actor Ryu Shi-won.[11] She was also the MC for the 20th Seoul Music Awards which was held on January 20, 2011. She was also the MC for the 50th Anniversary Music Wave Concert which was held on March 12, 2011 together with Tiffany & Nichkhun.
On August 13, 2011, she was an MC for 2011 Incheon Korean Music Wave together with Tiffany[12] and also for K-Pop All Star Live in Niigata which was held on August 20, 2011 together with Tiffany & Sooyoung.[13] On October 11, 2011, Yuri and Tiffany returned to "Show! Music Core" as permanent MCs after a 1 year and 3 months absence, leaving on January 29, 2012 to focus on her drama debut Fashion King. On November 12, 2011 she was a MC for K-POP Music Festival in Sydney together with Tiffany.
On September 1, 2013, Yuri and Tiffany returned as MCs for the 2013 Incheon Korean Music Wave, which makes it their 4th year as MCs for the event.[14]
Yuri co-hosted the 3rd Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards with Oh Sang-jin on February 12, 2014.[15]

Songwriting

She made her debut as a lyricist with the song "Mistake", from Girls' Generation's Korean third mini album, "Hoot (EP)". Along with the fellow members Sooyoung and Seohyun, wrote the song "Baby Maybe" and along with the fellow member Seohyun, wrote the song "XYZ" from Girls' Generation's fourth album "I Got a Boy".

Television series

She had a small role in a television segment, The King's Boyfriend, which was part of the 2005–2006 KMTV Super Junior documentary, Super Junior Show.
At the end of 2009, she cast for KBS2 reality show Invincible Youth (청춘불패) with her fellow member, Sunny. Because of Girls' Generation's international promotions, Yuri left the show along with Sunny and Hyuna of 4Minute on June 2010.[16]
On June 17, 2013, it was revealed that Yuri together with Hyoyeon and others will appear on "Dancing 9", Mnet’s newest global dance survival show. The two Girls' Generation members will coach the show’s contestants as "K-pop dance masters" alongside other notable stars.[17]
